2020 International Education Award
presented to
Dorothy Wilson

Every year, the Philosophy Faculty at St. Philip’s College bestows an award on a member of our community for their work supporting international education.  With this in mind, I asked Jan Olsen of the Interfaith Welcome Coalition of San Antonio to describe the work Dorothy Wilson did as part of the “Bus Station Team” that helps welcome and orient migrant families arriving into the United States:

“Dot became a frequent and welcome volunteer at the bus station. She didn’t speak Spanish but a much more universal language….compassion.

She spent her time at the bus station sitting on the floor and playing with the children. Sometimes she would draw the little ones in a circle and read books to them which meant showing them the pictures and acting out the stories. She would play ball with the older kids. Sometimes she would just sit with the adults.

Of course, she always helped us with the tasks…handing out backpacks and travel lunches but her most important contribution was her presence which communicated an authentic kindness and caring.

Dot’s presence was both comforting and fun for the kids and the rest of the volunteers.”

The Philosophy Faculty values these volunteer efforts to aid vulnerable migrant families released from nearby detention centers and dropped off at the downtown San Antonio Greyhound bus station.

Thus, for her work as an international volunteer with the Interfaith Welcome Coalition of San Antonio, Dorothy Wilson is hereby named the recipient of this year’s “International Education Award” from the Philosophy Faculty at St. Philip’s College.
