Connie Economy
The first two Philosophy courses, 309 Logic and 310 Ethics, were taught at St. Philip’s College during the 1973-1974 academic year by Connie Economy, the first instructor of Philosophy and Ethics.

In AY 2023-2024, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the teaching of Philosophy at St. Philip’s College, and we recognized and celebrated those who have served the students of the College over these five decades.

About Philosophy & Ethics at
St. Philip's College

Picture
We are especially grateful for the dedication and hard work of the members of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Team, that have been a powerful voice for ethical decision making!
We have a productive and engaged faculty, which sponsors a number of student organizations, and works in cooperation with professional colleagues in other departments from across the College to advance student learning about philosophy and ethics.  We are also active in the Discipline, and are particularly supportive of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE), which is a comprehensive, international organization dedicated to advancing scholarship, education, and practice in practical and professional ethics.

Here are few examples of our activities on campus and off:

The Academy of Distinguished Philosophers
The San Antonio Academy of Distinguished Philosophers is sponsored by the San Antonio Philosophical Society. The San Antonio Philosophical Society is an unincorporated nonprofit association founded in April of 2023 by Profs. Marie Feldmeier and Andrew Hill.
The Rev. Dr. Prof. John Travis was the first member of the St. Philip's College Philosophy Faculty to be promoted to the rank of Professor, and then in turn, upon retirement in 2013, the first to be recognized with the extraordinary rank of Professor Emeritus.

He was also the first individual to receive the "Teaching Excellence Award" from the Philosophy Faculty posthumously following his death on February 25, 2022.

He has also been recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Distinguished Philosophers by the San Antonio Philosophical Society.
